Brown Pelican

The picture of this Brown Pelican was taken on Fort Myers Beach, Florida. The picture of this Brown Pelican was taken with the CANON EOS7D and the CANON 100-400mm lens and the CANON 580EXII flash.

On my recent trip to Southwest Florida, I was so pleased to be able to take pictures of Pelicans as well as the many shorebirds that are present in this area. I was able to capture birds at sunrise and sunset which is not very practical for me at home living in the East Village of Manhattan.

Pied-billed Grebe

The picture of this Pied-billed Grebe was taken at the Jamaica Bay National Wildlife Refuge. The picture of this Pied-billed Grebe was taken with the CANON EOS7D and the CANON 100-400mm lens.

There were hundreds of water birds on the East Pond at Jamaica Bay National Wildlife Refuge last week. Some of the adventure of taking pictures of such a large group is to discover a species I had not noticed while looking through binoculars. Also I do not carry a scope along with all the camera gear so sometimes the camera behaves in a similar fashion to a scope in discovering bird species.

Snow Goose

The picture of this Snow Goose was taken at Jamaica Bay in Queens, NY. The picture of this Snow Goose was taken with the CANON EOS7D and the CANON 100-400mm lens.

I like to stop at the parking lot on Causeway Blvd just before the parking lot for Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge early in the morning. When it is a cool clear windy morning, I can photograph Gulls in flight and get closer to the waterfowl in the bay. This is where I found this solo Snow Goose which is unusual because they are usually found in large flocks. The Snow Geese are just starting to arrive in this area.

Semipalmated Plover

The picture of this Semipalmated Plover was taken at Jones Beach in Nassau, NY. The picture of this Semipalmated Plover was taken with the CANON EOS7D and the CANON 100-400mm lens and the CANON 580EXII flash.

Jones Beach on a beautiful fall day with the temperatures in the 60’s was wonderful. There were thousands of assorted shorebirds on the beach. It was the the first time I have photograped a Semipalmated Plover in nonbreeding plumage.

American Coot

The picture of this American Coot was taken at the Jamaica Bay National Wildlife Refuge. The picture of this American Coot was taken with the CANON EOS7D and the CANON 100-400mm lens and the CANON 580EXII flash.

This Amerian Coot is a hoot! I watched him as he attempted to wriggle up this perch many times only to fall forward into the water. He picked himself up, flapped his wings and started all over again.

Brant

The picture of this Brant was taken at the Jamaica Bay National Wildlife Refuge. The picture of this was taken with the CANON EOS7D and the CANON 100-400mm lens and the CANON 580EXII flash.

I could not resist the portrait style of this lovely creature. This Brant stole my heart – as most birds do!

Hooded Merganser

The picture of this Hooded Merganser (male) was taken at the Jamaica Bay National Wildlife Refuge. The picture of this Hooded Merganser duck was taken with the CANON EOS7D and the CANON 100-400mm lens and the CANON 580EXII flash.

The weather has been so beautiful this fall. It was an extraordinary day at Jamaica Bay National Wildlife Refuge with the temperature in the sixties. The fall colors have remained at their peak for the longest time I can remember. There were many waterbirds at the East Pond in addition to this Hooded Merganser. There were Gadwalls, American Wigeons, American Coots, Green-winged Teals and Ruddy Ducks.
