There were hundreds of water birds on the East Pond at Jamaica Bay National Wildlife Refuge last week. Some of the adventure of taking pictures of such a large group is to discover a species I had not noticed while looking through binoculars. Also I do not carry a scope along with all the camera gear so sometimes the camera behaves in a similar fashion to a scope in discovering bird species.
