American Coot

The picture of this American Coot was taken at the Jamaica Bay National Wildlife Refuge. The picture of this American Coot was taken with the CANON EOS7D and the CANON 100-400mm lens and the CANON 580EXII flash.

This Amerian Coot is a hoot! I watched him as he attempted to wriggle up this perch many times only to fall forward into the water. He picked himself up, flapped his wings and started all over again.

Brant

I could not resist the portrait style of this lovely creature. This Brant stole my heart – as most birds do!

The weather has been so beautiful this fall. It was an extraordinary day at Jamaica Bay National Wildlife Refuge with the temperature in the sixties. The fall colors have remained at their peak for the longest time I can remember. There were many waterbirds at the East Pond in addition to this Hooded Merganser. There were Gadwalls, American Wigeons, American Coots, Green-winged Teals and Ruddy Ducks.

Red-tailed Hawk Juvenile

The picture of this Red-tailed Hawk Juvenile was taken at The New York Botanical Gardens in the Bronx, NY. The picture of this Juvenile Red-tailed Hawk was taken with the CANON EOS7D and the CANON 100-400mm lens and the CANON 580EXII flash.

I was very fortunate to be able to share part of the most beautiful fall Sunday at the New York Botanical Gardens in full fall foliage with this very accommodating juvenile Red-Tailed Hawk. It felt like he would have even shared his squirrel lunch with me if that was to my liking.

Brown Creeper

The picture of this Brown Creeper was taken in Central Park in New York City in the Rambles. The picture of this Brown Creeper was taken with the CANON EOS7D and the CANON 100-400mm lens and the CANON 580EXII flash.

I have never been able to get a picture of the Brown Creeper before and this little guy just flew onto the tree right in front of me and began is ascent. The rambles is usually a really dark area and this was a very overcast day. I am very grateful to have the better beamer attached to my flash in order to capture a picture such as this.

I took this picture at the blind on the East Pond at Jamaica Bay. There were many different water birds at the East Pond this past weekend.

Dark-eyed Juncos

One of the major joys of visiting and taking pictures at the Jamaica Bay National Wildlife Refuge is the abundance and variety of birds all year round. I do like having the pair of Dark-eyed Junco birds because of the shapes it creates in the picture and how it really enhances the depth of field.

Green-winged Teal

The picture of this Green-winged Teal was taken at the Jamaica Bay National Wildlife Refuge. The picture of this Green-winged Teal was taken with the CANON EOS7D and the CANON 100-400mm

I spent this past Saturday and Sunday at the Jamaica Bay National Wildlife Refuge where there was lots of activity wtih many types of birds. There were a large variety of ducks and waterbirds, many Hawks and lots of Yellow-rumped Warblers and Kinglets. The fall foliage was spectacular in the clear crisp cool weather.

Carolina Wren

The picture of this Carolina Wren was taken at the Jamaica Bay National Wildlife Refuge. The picture of this Carolina Wren was taken with my CANON EOS7D with the CANON 100-400mm lens and the CANON 580EXII flash.

I have been trying to get a picture of the Carolina Wren for sometime. The Carolina Wren is a very nervous bird and I finally was able to get this capture at the blind at Jamaica Bay National Wildlife Center for the mere moment he landed on this branch.
