Brown Pelican in flight

The picture of this Brown Pelican in flight was taken on Fort Myers Beach, Florida. The picture of this was taken with the CANON EOS7D and the CANON 100-400mm lens and the CANON 580EXII flash.
I was pleased that I have been “practicing” taking pictures of the local gulls in flight so that when I got to Florida my technique was coming along in order to shoot the many birds in flight on the beaches.

Pileated Woodpecker in flight

The picture of this Pileated Woodpecker in flight was taken in Shrewsbury, Vermont. This picture was taken with the CANON EOS7D with the CANON 100-400mm lens.

I took this picture early in the morning before there was much light. Since I needed to use an ISO of 1000 in order to capture the Pileated Woodpecker in flight, it had lots of noise that I needed to remove in Photoshop. I usually use Noise Ninja in conjunction with Adobe Photoshop CS5 to remove noise.

Unless I have a right on camera setting, I have alot of noise to contend with on a regular basis. Now that I am using a flash more regularly, the noise factor is being reduced quite a bit..

Osprey in flight

The picture of this Osprey in flight was taken at the Rye Marsh Conservancy in Westchester, New York. This picture was taken with the CANON EOS7D with the CANON 100-400mm lens.
It was exciting to be able to get the picture of this Osprey with back lighting and still have enough detail on the underside of the bird. The effect of the light coming through the feathers reminds me of stained glass lighting.

Osprey in flight

The picture of this Osprey in flight was taken at the Rye Marsh Conservancy in Westchester, New York. All but southernmost populations of Ospreys are migratory, vacating their breeding grounds in late summer for rain-forest rivers and fish-rich seacoasts and lakes of Central and South America, returning north each spring as waters warm and fish become accessible.
This picture was taken with the Canon EOS7D with the Canon 100-400 mm lens.
It was wonderful to visit the Rye Marshlands Convervancy. It is wonderfully maintained and very quiet. The path through the marsh got me very close to the birds for photography and I loved the feeling of being surrounded by the marsh. The walk through the fields was great for macro photography. I saw more dragonflies here than any other place I have been.

Herring Gull in flight

The picture of this Immature Herring Gull in flight was taken at Jamaica Bay National Wildlife Refuge. Herring Gulls in flight adjust their wing beat and orientation to the wind to their regulate speed. The Herring Gull spends considerable portion of flight time gliding or soaring with outstretched wings.

This picture was taken with the CANON EOS 7D and the CANON 100-400mm lens at the Northend of the East Pond at Jamaica Bay National Wildlife Refuge.

Sandpipers in flight

The picture of these Sandpipers in flight was taken at the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge. This picture was taken with the CANON EOS7D and CANON 200-400mm lens.

The Shore Bird Migration is in process at the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge. There were hundreds of Sandpipers at the East Pond getting sustenance for their flights south.

Black Skimmer in flight

The picture of this Black Skimmer in flight was taken at Nickerson Beach, Lido Beach, NY. I was at Nickerson Beach very early on an overcast morning. Black Skimmers, Oyster Catchers and Least Terns were abundant. This is a very pleasant way to be able to take pictures of birds in flight. The hardest part is choosing which ones to keep and which ones to delete because I had so many pictures to go through.

The Black Skimmer has very beautiful lines and of course the orange on the beak is a very beautiful addition. It is so hard not to marvel and be moved by these magnificent creatures of nature – birds. I feel so fortunate to have the opportunity to photograph them and in turn share them with others.
