American Kestrel

The picture of this American Kestrel was taken at the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge.I was able to get this picture from the picnic tables near the Visitor’s Center. I usually look for butterflies in that area but the field was mowed back down to a lawn The American Kestrel was perched on the Swallow box and had a clear view of any acitivity in the area.

Semipalmated Plover in Flight

Took the picture of this Semipalmated Plover yesterday while attending the 7th Annual Jamaica Bay Shorebird Festival. Even though there were not that many shorebirds in attendance, the 100+ participants made it very festive. Lloyd Spitalnik and Kevin Karlson led informative workshops and gave wonderful photo presentations. Don Riepe discussed the history, current problems and future options for the Jamaica Bay Refuge.
