Red-belled Woodpecker

It was interesting to learn that Woodpeckers have tongues that are up to three time larger than their beak which enables them to capture insects. You can see some of his tongue in this picture.

The fact that I get to discover so many wonderful facts about birds by studying the pictures of these little guys on my computer monitor is a major joy for me.

Snow Goose at Jamaica Bay

I like to go to the parking lot right on Jamaica Bay before the turn off for the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge where I can get closer to the water. There has been one Snow Goose at this location for awhile.

I love going to the Northern Pond area at the Bronx Zoo to take pictures of ducks. On this really cold day, most of the pond was frozen so the ducks were relegated to a small area near my camera.

How cool is that!

I have been exploring more of my local neighborhood for birds since it has been difficult to get around too far because of the snow. The two times this weekend I visited Thompkins Square Park, I was able to get pictures of this beautiful Red-tailed Hawk as he was perched on a snowy branch in the middle of Thompkins Square Park.
